The Oklahoma Railway Museum is proud to host Motorcar Excursions for our community. 

A motorcar excursion is a unique way for train enthusiasts to explore the rails and experience the thrill of riding on a vintage motorcar. Along the way, participants can take in the scenery, spot wildlife, and stop at scenic overlooks for photo opportunities. For train enthusiasts, a motorcar excursion is a perfect way to experience the thrill of the rails in a unique and memorable way.

Oklahoma Railway Museum is an Affiliate of NARCOA (North America Rail Car Owners Association).  All Motor Car Events are conducted under NARCOA Rules and Regulations.

The Motorcar Operation are for ORM members who belong to NARCOA (North American Rail Car Owners of America) and own a motor car having been licensed by NARCOA by passing a rules test and mentoring. ORM as an Affiliate of NARCOA obtains permission from the railroad to conduct an operation and obtains an insurance policy covering the railroad, ORM and NARCOA. Members can invite guest who must sign a release to ride with them or if seats are available and any operator may allow a guest to ride upon signing the release.

Saturday/Sunday, October 12-13, 2024

Arkansas-Oklahoma Railroad – Wilburton, Oklahoma

This weekend’s ride will be on the ex-Rock Island Railroad trackage that A-OK operates.  Each day will start and end at the A-OK’s headquarters in Wilburton, Ok. On Saturday, October 12, we will do a round trip eastward from Wilburton to Howe, Ok. Total mileage will be 86 miles.  On Sunday, October 13th, we will run from Wilburton to McAlester to Red Oak back to Wilburton. Mileage will be 92 miles.

Saturday, October 12-Wilburton to Howe, OK

Set On Location: South Central Ave railroad crossing in Wilburton, 1-1/2 blocks south of Highway 270.

The crossing is wide and is not a major north south street in Wilburton.  Flaggers will be needed for safety issues while offloading and loading our equipment.  We will be able to park our trucks and trailers on railroad property on the north side of the track, east or west side of the road.  Be courteous and don’t block any one in.

(Note: This run is dependent on railroad operations and can be cancelled at any time.  If it is cancelled, we will run west on Sunday’s Wilburton to McAlester schedule both days.)

Meet Information:

Start Set On:               8:00 AM

Safety Meeting:          8:50 AM

Departure:                   9:00 AM

Approximate Return:  4:00-5:00 PM

From the set on location in Wilburton, we will go east towards Red Oak, where we will have a rest stop and the opportunity, if you desire, to buy food or snacks for lunch in Wister. From Red Oak we will travel to Howe and turn our cars. (There is a Dollar General ¼ mi away if we need a break before returning to Wister.) We will then head back west a few miles to Wister for lunch and break. The closest restaurant is about a ½ mile hike to get to.  After lunch we will return to Red Oak for a short break and then to Wilburton to tie up for the night. We have permission to leave our cars on the track for the night.

Sunday, October 13, 2024 – Wilburton to McAlester to Red Oak to Wilburton, OK – 92 miles Round Trip.

Set On Location:  Same as Saturday, October 12th.

Meet Information

Start Set On:               8:00 AM

Safety Meeting:          8:50 AM or earlier if ready

Departure:                   9:00 AM or earlier if ready

Approximate Return:  4:00-5:00 PM

From the set on location in Wilburton we will go east to McAlester and turn our cars at the South 5th Street crossing. From there we will head east to North Strong Blvd where we will have a rest stop and lunch at Braum’s, about a ¼ mile hike. After lunch we will head back to Wilburton for another break at the A-OK offices. At this point a decision can be made to continue on east to Red Oak and return or to call it a day at Wilburton and set off.

 

Cost:   $70.00 (Cash or Check) for one or both days payable to the Oklahoma Railway Museum

Requirements:  Must be a member of ORM (see below)

                           Valid NARCOA insurance card and operator’s certificate required

                           NARCOA rulebook V8.4 in effect for this event

                           NARCOA and Affiliate Release Form (one page front and back), properly signed

                           NARCOA Rail Vehicle Car Inspection Form, properly signed.

Robbers Cave State Park, about 4-5 miles north of Wilburton on Highway 2.

No events going on in Wilburton so will have the town to ourselves.

Food places:

Motels in Wilburton do not have restaurants associated with them nor do they offer continental breakfasts.  Restaurants for evening meals are plentiful but morning breakfast can be narrowed down to 5 places: McDonald’s, Sonic, Donut Palace, Casey’s and the Choctaw Travel Plaza, all on the west side of Wilburton right off of Highway 270.
